what it is
Gestalt lets people in my Discord start their own game servers without asking me. They pick a game from a dropdown, and a few seconds later there's a server running on my homelab with its own address.
how it works
- Someone opens Gestalt's panel in Discord and picks a game.
- Gestalt starts that server in a Docker container on my Proxmox cluster. Up to about five run at once.
- Each server gets a numbered name like
minecraft1orfactorio1undergestalt.roguesector.dev. - Players connect through a cloud relay, so they don't install anything and my home IP stays hidden.
infrastructure
- Relay: a cloud relay as the main route, with a backup route.
- Backups cover the game worlds only, not whole VMs.
up next
- A web dashboard with Discord login
- Server owners can only change their own server, plus an admin view just for me
- A per-server game console in the browser
- Owner settings like the server icon (but not IPs or ports)
- Picking the game version or a modpack, like commercial hosts offer
